Beautiful Utah

The weather was perfect and the scenery, as usual breathtaking. Our backpacking trip to southern Utah this past weekend was astounding. We backpacked in to Upper Calf Creek Falls in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. To get there you have to hike down about a mile of slick rock. Once to the bottom, the trail becomes the stream and you feel like you are in paradise.

I have lived in Utah for about 8 years now and I am still taken aback by the state’s natural wonders, even to places I have been before.

There is much discussion over some GPUS proposals, as Ken Sain posts inGreen Votes.

One proposal. which would have penalized states for not honoring the affiliation agreement to place the GPUS nominated presidential candidate on affiliated ballot lines, has generated a lot of comments on Ken’s site.

The GPUS operates under the “grassroots democracy” key value as much as possible. It’s difficult, but doable. When operating as a national organization, however, the one uniting factor is having all affiliated states agree to put the nationally elected presidential candidate on affiliated state ballot lines.

Here in Utah, there were many Greens who knew they would vote for the Independent Candidate Ralph Nader, yet wanted to have David Cobb on its ballot line to help grow the party. For those folks, it was a no brainer.

Grassroots Democracy is the foothold of the Green Party of the United States. The GPUS has no intention of taking that away from states. This key value is at the essence of everything that is discussed at the national level (I am on all discussion lists, so I see firsthand what is discussed). Nothhing is decided from the “top down”. Everyone is a stakeholder. Decisions are made from the ground up.

The fact that states are to honor the nationally elected presidential candidate was a grassroots decision in itself on affiliation. In fact, the affiliation agreement itself was a grassroots decided upon document.

Further, states decide at a grassroots level to affiliate with the GPUS. By doing so, they decide, at the grassroots level, to abide by the grassroots decided upon affiliation agreement.

The proposal recently on the voting queue to penalize states for not honoring the affiliation agreement failed because it would have required a change to the GPUS bylaws. This proposal would have made the language more clear and explicit. Had this language been in place in 2004, some Greens in some states, such as Utah, would not have interpreted the bylaws incorrectly to mean that states did not have to honor their affiliation agreement.

And so the vagueries continue to exist. Hopefully lessons learned will be a good teacher.

Going backpacking

My first backpacking trip occured when I was 43. That was three years ago. That year I took two more backpacking trips and have been backpacking to various spots ever since.

I’m hooked.

I have a 4 day hiatus from teaching as part of the Utah Education Association’s state conference for teachers. I’m going backpacking.

Today Tom and I are leaving for a 4 day backpacking trip to the beautiful Upper Calf Creek Falls in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Wilderness of Southern Utah. The area where we will backpack to is just below about a mile of slickrock into a paradise of all sorts of wonderful plant and animal life. The trail is the stream where fish skirt around your ankles as you hike through the beauty of the canyon.

This experience will be my “education” for the next four days as I remind myself of the beautiful surroundings in which I am fortunate enough to live. So I won’t be blogging or reading (or hopefully even thingking) about polls on Bush or drilling for oil in Utah’s beautiful public lands.

I’ll be sure to post photos upon my return.

Here are two photos from our trip there a few years ago:

Wal-Mart Heiress returns degree

So the spoiled rich girl was caught red-handed.

Wal-Mart heiress Paige Laurie has returned her degree to USC for cheating for 3/12 years by paying someone to do her term papers and other assignments. Along with this, the University of Missouri has removed the girl’s name from a sports arena building named after her, something that was arranged by her billioinaire parents.

Arrest Warrant Issued for Tom DeLay

Arrest Warrant Issued for Tom DeLay
Former House Majority Leader Due in Court Friday
By SUZANNE GAMBOA, AP

AUSTIN, Texas (Oct. 19) – A state court issued an arrest warrant on Wednesday for Rep. Tom DeLay, requiring him to appear in Texas for booking on state conspiracy and money laundering charges.

The court set an initial $10,000 bail as a routine step before the Texas Republican’s first court appearance Friday.

DeLay, R-Texas, could be fingerprinted and photographed, although his lawyers had hoped to avoid this step.

Fort Bend County Chief Deputy Craig Brady said arrangements were being made to bring DeLay to the sheriff’s office in his home county sometime Thursday for booking and fingerprinting.

The process was expected to take between 45 minutes and an hour. Brady said a specific time has not been set, but Sheriff Milton Wright was contacted Wednesday by DeLay’s attorney, Dick DeGuerin.

DeLay’s court appearance will be in Austin.

The warrant, known as a capias, is “a matter of routine and bond will be posted,” DeGuerin said.

DeLay has stepped down as U.S. House majority leader – at least temporarily – under a Republican rule requiring him to relinquish the post if charged with a felony.

Green Blogs getting out

Thanks to Jenni of Jen’s Green Journal, her blog and mine were featured in the “Blog Watch” of today’s issue of
Utah Policy.

Hopefully they will list our blogs along with the rest of the list on the left sidebar.

Envirocare Hearing

Jason Groenwald sent an email describing today’s Envirocare Hearing on expanding Envirocare’s waste acceptance amounts. The legislature did table the expansion resolution.

Jason reports that “Governor Huntsman’s top executive at the Department of Environmental Quality, Dianne Nielson, voted to deny HEAL Utah standing in our legal appeal of the Envirocare expansion because she said doubling nuclear waste disposal capacity in Utah is not an issue of significant public importance. For anyone who wondered what kind of influence the Governor’s brother-in-law would have as one of the new financial investors in Envirocare, you now have the answer.”

The fight continues. To get involved, go to HEAL Utah

Living

Last week I had a conversation with some women about people’s attitudes towards life, living, and longevity. I expressed my developing realization that I don’t really have a lot of time to do all there is I desire to do! This was at first taken as a negative mentality so I had to explain that it is a positive thing for me because I keep discovering more and more things I want to learn and do.

It’s positive for me because it keeps me hopping – or “kicking” (as my grandma used to say) and continually striving to learn and do and set goals.

Now….if I can just figure out some timelines for myself to do all these things…..

🙂

Backpacking this weekend

I started backpacking just a few years ago on my 43rd birthday. I was hooked immediately and love going backpacking whenever I can!
