Some myths about the GPUT split

There are various perspectives on the GPUT split. Lately, there are also some erroneous facts being circulated on various “green” discussion lists. Here are a few with some debunking of those myths (with actual quotes from various lists, but with names omitted), all the “debunking” which can be verified via public records upon request:

International Human Rights Day
“Let us be clear: torture can never be an instrument to fight terror, for torture is an instrument of terror. […]

Today, on Human Rights Day, let us recommit ourselves to the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and let us rededicate ourselves to wiping the scourge of torture from the face of the earth.”

Wrong Strategy, Wrong War, Wretched Results

…That’s the title of Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson’s speech to the Drug Policy Alliance in Long Beach, California on November 12.

Rocky criticizes the war on drugs in the U.S. and gives very real examples of the victims on the so-called war. He urges policy makers to develop effective strategies and to discontinue using already stretched resources towards strategies and programs that are not effective and have not for the past 30 years.

Changes

My 21-year-old son, Greg, informed me tonight that he will be moving to Maryland in February (we live in Utah). We are from Maryland (except my husband who is from Utah) and he wants to be closer to his grandparents.

I have mixed feelings about this. I want him to continue to discover himself and who he is. On the other hand, he is leaving behind a beautiful and sweet woman – his girlfriend – not to mention the family here. He moved here from Marylandwhen he was 15 and a very troubled youth. We were able to support him and help him carve a positive path for himself which resulted in a happier life.

Greg plans to drive to Maryland in February. Until then we will cherish each moment with him. After that I will only see him twice a year.

Yet more gifts-WalMart the Movie and United for Peace and Justice

From the creators of “WalMart: The High Cost of Low Price”:

Consider holding a screening of the the Wal-Mart movie and having something new to fight about: economic justice, the role of corporations, and the country’s health care crisis. You know, good traditional holiday stuff. 😉 Have a chat, a fight, a discussion, whatever you call it. (Robert Greenwald) Then write about it on filmmaker Robert Greenwald’s blog

Los Reaction

My soon-to-be 19-year-old son has a rock band called Los Reaction. Tom and I went to see them a couple of weeks ago at an all ages club called The Circuit near our home.

The band was tight and played well together. They play along the same style as Anti-Flag.
I felt really good that Brian invited me and Tom to come hear him play – he even thanked us in front of the audience!

My students’ projects

My Advisory students have organized a community holidy giving project.

Today was exciting because ABC channel 4 showed up to film our project and do interviews with me and my students. Since I don’t watch TV I’m not sure if we got on, but others were watching for it and will let me know I’m sure.

I have photos below of today’s activities.
