It’s Official: Desert Green Slate of Candidates…..and the surprise

Earlier today I wrote about my experience filing for office and promised an update and a surprise. Here is the update for the Desert Greens 2006 slate of candidates:

Julian Hatch filed today for U.S. Senate. Running in that race are also Pete Ashdown (D), Scott N. Bradley (Constitution), Orrin G. Hatch (R), Brian E. Jenkins (R), Joseph Labonte (Personal Choice), Roger I. Price (Personal Choice), Michael T. Ridgway (R), and Dave Starr Seely (Libertarian).

Chuck Tripp file for County Council at Large (C). Running in that race are also Don W. Johnstun (Libertarian), Jimmy L. Cadman (Personal Choice), Jim Bradley (D), Janice Auger (R),

In the Salt Lake County Council Race that I am running in (District #5)these people are also running:
Nate Hendricks (D), Russell A. Cannon (R), Cortlund G. Ashton (R), and Jeff Allen (R).

In the race for State House Distrcit #43 (Tom King), these people are also running:
Wayne A. Harper (R), Mark Faux (Constitution).

Now for the surpise:

Kathy Dopp will be running of Summit County Clerk. Also running are Susan Follett (D) and Cindy LoPiccolo (D), which means after the primary, there will be a Democract and a Desert Green.

Kathy Dopp is nationally known for her work on the Investigation pf the Accuracy of Elections, with regards to Diebold, and has the website,
Utah Counts Votes. She wants to attempt to win the Summit County Clerk seat so that she can prove the inaccuracy of the Diebold Voting Equipment. This would quite a victory for voters and for Greens.

Go Green! More updates in a couple of days.

Anti-Recruitment Sidwalk Picket

The weekend anti-war events began today with an anti-recruitment protest in front of a Salt Lake City military recruitment center. People held signs, played instruments, and the Radical Cheerleaders performed(I am a member! We performed right in front of the store front window where the recruiters were working at their desks. We really “shook it up” and by the end of the cheer, despite their not looking at us, we had the dudes smiling with this cheer:

“War and Occupation
Is wrong for any nation!
The U.S. needs to fix and see
the holes in our democracy!
Bring the troops home NOW! (three times)

During the last sentence, Shea, one of the cheerleaders leaps into the air while gonging a gong. She was literally flying across the store front window, getting laughs out of the recruiters….

Greens Filing for Office – a surprise in store

Yesterday Tom and I filed for the offices we will be seeking for the Desert Greens Green Party of Utah in 2006.

When we arrived at the Salt Lake County Clerk’s Office, Ken Larson, Moderator of the Personal Choice Party, was filing for Utah State Senate, District #2.

I filed for Salt Lake County Council, District #5 and Tom filed for Utah State House District #43.
We had to complete a form with our contact information and name as we would like it to appear on the ballot. Mine will be “Deanna L. Taylor” and Tom’s will be “Tom King”.

Then we had to take an oath that we would adhere to all campaign election laws, etc.
For our (ahem)modest filing fees, we received packets of information including when to file financial reports, and huge maps of our districts.

So far for the race I filed, it is just me and the male incumbent, Cortlund G. Ashton, a republican, and the chair of the county council. The race for which Tom also (as of this morning) is the incumbent male republican Wayne Harper and him. When Tom ran in 2004, it was the same scenario on the ballot and Tom obtained 10% of the vote for our district.

The rest of our candidates will file today. I will provide an update. There are some surprises that I am saving for that update.

You can view a list of candidates by going to my “2006 Politics Handbook” on my left sidebar and clicking on the appropriate links.

“The Dominoes Have Begun to Fall”

Those are the words of Planned Parenthood who has put out an alert that 11 more states are considering criminalizing abortion – even in cases of rape and incest.

The abortion ban signed in South Dakota last week was only the beginning. Eleven more states have proposed criminalizing abortion. The governor of Mississippi, Haley Barbour, recently said if an abortion ban reaches his desk, he will sign it. Act now to stop the dominoes from falling.

Planned Parenthood’s campaign is to stop this dominoe effect and also to reiterate that prevention is the key – not punishment.

Tell Gov. Barbour [and your governor] that Americans do not support any bans on the right to choose.

Urge Gov. Huntsman to veto House Bill 100

From HEAL Utah

Gov. Huntsman has until March 21st to veto House Bill 100, a bill passed by the Legislature that would severely restrict the ability of environmental groups–and any other non-profit–to use the courts to stop environmentally harmful practices by corporations or the government. Gov. Huntsman has hinted he may veto the bill because it impinges on the constitutional rights of non-profits, but he has yet to take decisive action.

Please take a minute to contact Gov. Huntsman and ask him to veto HB 100 and preserve the right of environmental organizations to access the courts. He alone has the power to prevent this legislation from becoming law. You can call the governor at (801) 538-1000 or send an email here: http://www.utah.gov/governor/contact.html.

Rep. Aaron Tilton (R-Springville) proposed HB 100 to seek revenge on environmental groups for winning a court order delaying construction of the Legacy Parkway. His vindictive legislation purports to prevent environmental groups from filing “frivolous lawsuits,” and requires organizations to post a bond to cover any costs of delaying a project–including lost profits, employee wages, construction costs and taxes–or face losing their right to do business with the state. These bonds could easily reach in excess of millions of dollars.
