People’s Rights Before Corporate Rights

Dean Myerson of the Green Institute has announced that a report is available of a presentation that David Cobb and Ben Manski gave:

The Green Institute sponsored a seminar with David Cobb and Ben Manski on June 24 entitled “People’s Rights before Corporate Rights” which described how corporations, which are artificial creations of
the state, are not entitled to the inalienable rights reserved to the people in the U.S. constitution. Corporations should not be “good corporate citizens” because corporations should not be citizens at all.

First Backpacking Trip of 2006

Tom and I took our first backpacking trip of the season early this week. We went to Red Pine Canyon in the Wasatch Mountains.

Photos can be viewed here.

Here is a photo I took of Pfeifferhorn Peak from the Maybird Gulch Trail on our second day:

Respite

It was great to leave the valley and take our first backpacking trip of the season. I was in way better shape than I thought, carrying a pack weighing about 30-35 pounds and hiking the first day about 2-3 miles, virtually all uphill, without having to stop much. It was a beautiful couple of days.

It’s always nice to get away from everyday life and technology and just enjoy “being”.

Here is a photo of Pfeifferhorn Peak that I took at the end of the Maybird Gulch Trail we hiked on our second day:

Would this kill the PFS project?

The Salt Lake Tribune published this article: Panel rejects PFS nuclear storage–
U.S. Senate: A subcommittee votes to allow facilties only in states with reactors
.

A Senate panel dealt a blow to Private Fuel Storage’s plan to build temporary nuclear storage in Utah on Tuesday, voting in favor of short-term storage, but specifically prohibiting storage at the PFS facility.
The Senate Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee included $10 million for the temporary storage facilities, but requires them to be federally run and located in states that have nuclear reactors.
The spent nuclear fuel would be kept there until a technology can be developed to extract the reusable parts of the fuel and dispose of the rest.

Since Utah has no reactors, this would significantly impact the PFS storage project on the Goshute reservation.

Of course, PFS spokespersons are stating that by doing this Congress if just prolonging the storage of waste since, according to PFS, licensing will take 8-10 years for any facility.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out and I’ll be sure to provide any updates here.

Emily’s health issues

I just learned today that Emily’s GI specialist visit went o.k but she has to have more tests. She was told she has a “Mallor-Weiss Tear” from the bottom of her stomach to her esophagus. I’m doing more research on this to find out more about it. Needless to say I’m worried.

Oil Protest Today

Today I participated in a Rally for an Oil Free Congress to advocate that our elected leaders (current and future) develop policies that benefit all people and not rich oil executives. I and two other radical cheerleaders provided some entertainment. Thanks to Cory at The Cause for organizing this rally. He has photos of the event also.

Here are photos Tom and I took:

Away from my computer

I will be on a backpacking trip through Wednesday in the beautiful Wasatch Mountains. This is our reward to ourselves for getting both our gardens in shape and planting 24 rows of corn, squash, beans and sunflowers over the weekend!

Tom and I plan to hike the Red Pine Trail (for those of you familiar with that)with the goal of getting to the upper lake (we’ll see – there’s probably still a good bit of snow there).

When we return, we will be attending the Rally for an Oil Free Congress on Wednesday afternoon.

I’ll get back to my blogging schedule upon my return.
