California’s Proposal to the GPUS

Read the background information on this at: Report

Today the California GP put forth a proposal to the GPUS NC to conduct an investigation into the Utah Green Party scenario of 2004.

The proposal is filled with all sorts of erroneous facts. Example:

California states in its proposal background:

“In court the state of UTah found in favor of the GPUT group being the
continuing green party of Utah with the right to use the name.”

This is highly misleading. Anyone who has actually read the court petition knows this is false.
The court case was to have the court accept the change of officers that the GPUT had made so that they would honor the certification of
Cobb as candidate.

Cindy Sheehan to Speak at August 30 Bush Protest

I just heard from a fellow activist that Cindy Sheehan will be speaking at the August 30 Bush protest in Salt Lake City.

A member of the organizing commitee has been in communication with Cindy’s sister to arrange this. DeDe (Cindy’s Sister) has been an integral part of the initiation of the Stop the Divine Strake Coalition. I have been priveleged to work with her on this project. She is active with Gold Star Families for Peace, of which Sheehan is a co-founder.

Cindy has so many wonderful messages. You can read them at the Gold Star Families for Peace website. As a mother of two “draft-age” boys, a teacher, and an outspoken opponent of the military recruiting clause in the No Child Left Behind Act, Cindy’s words mean so much to me.

Thanks Cindy, DeDe and everyone behind the Camp Casey Peace Movement.

Deal on SLCo Soccer Stadium Will Likely Hurt Rail Funding

It never fails. Wishy-washy politicians. Some time ago the SLCo Council and SLCo Mayor Peter Corroon nixed the building of a REAL Soccer Stadium in Sandy.

But pressure does amazing things. After a meeting with the governor, SL City Mayor Rocky Anderson, and others, Corroon caved and now the stadium is being built and the ground has even been broken with a plan for how it will be funded.

Today’s Deseret News reports that the proposed funding for Real would cut into transportation budget.

A proposed deal to fund the Real Salt Lake soccer stadium in Sandy has complicated plans to pay for commuter rail through Salt Lake County, according to House Speaker Greg Curtis.
Instead of using hotel-room tax dollars to fund the line, county leaders may have to forgo building one of four new TRAX lines in favor of building commuter rail, said Curtis, a Sandy Republican.

This is crazy. Citizens have been crying out for more TRAX lines and now a new project will supercede projects on which voters already approved?

I am not happy about this and will certainly make it known that our proposed TRAX lines need to stay in the list of projects to be implemented.

Camp Casey 3

We have been in touch via email and phone with folks at Camp Casey and have been preparing for our trip there on Thursday.

Last week Cindy Sheehan spent Friday and Saturday night in the hospital suffering from dehydration, probably as a result of neglect from stress and activity. She has been staying at Willie Nelson’s home in Austin and a hotel in McGregor (outside of Crawford) and has been visiting the peace camp daily. She plans to be at CC3 this weekend.

There are about 100 protestors camped there right now.

Amazingly (or not), George Bush, who always takes a month vacation at his ranch in Crawford (across the road from Camp Casey), cut this year’s vacation short and only spent 10 days there. Hmmmm…..

Code Pink on Thursday (the day we arrive)is planting “Visions of Peace” – a pink garden and memorial that will consist of children’s shoes to symbolize the lives of children lost. This garden will be located at the entrance of CC3.

Arlington West crosses (to mark the lives of soldiers lost) have also been being constructed and erected.

Fellow Green Bill Holloway will be meeting and greeting us at the airport in Austin. He has to remain in Austin for a couple of days but we will travel on to Crawford from there – about a 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive.

Tom is hoping to offer his expertise in electrical work for whatever is needed at the Crawford Peace House and CC3. But whatever is needed, our plan is to work and help as much as we can and are needed.

America’s Top Five Cleanest Cities

This came across my email desk today. I belong to a discussion group for residents of West Jordan. An elected city official belongs to the group and passed this on, in response to his desire to make West Jordan the cleanest city in Utah.

This comes from Readers Digest and the top five cleanest cities:
America’s Top 5 Cleanest Cities

From air to water to trash, Reader’s Digest ran the numbers. The results
will surprise you.

Concerned Utahns of all affiliations putting politics aside to stage protest during President Bush’s visit

A recently formed group of Utah citizens including veterans, professionals, retirees, students, business owners, and clergy, is massing an entirely new kind of rally to coincide with President Bush and Secretary Condoleeza Rice’s visit to the American Legion convention.

The rally will be on August 30th, 2006, from 11am-1pm on the West Side of Washington Square Park, and is expected to draw thousands.

“Even here in Utah, the reddest state in the nation, we feel an obligation to speak out. More and more Americans are agreeing on one point: The Bush administration and its supporters in Congress are hurting America.” says Penny Breiman, a local businessperson and one of the event’s participants.

With organizers comprised of Utahns from both sides of the political spectrum, interest in the event has been unprecedented.

“You hear Utahns everywhere voicing serious concerns about this administration, in hushed tones. We think it’s time point out the elephant in the corner”, states David Pace, another participant. “Republicans and Democrats are gravely concerned about the Bush administration, with the misguided war in Iraq as the tip of the iceberg. We want leadership for a safe, strong, and prosperous America. We want a way forward that encourages America’s growth while integrating common-sense policies on the environment. We’re just not getting that from this administration, or from the rubber stamp congress that supports them.”

Reflecting the broader audience of those concerned, the atmosphere of this event is decidedly centrist. “I’m dressing nicely for the event, and I’m asking my friends to do the same.”, says Misty Fowler, who plans on attending the event.

The rally will consist of a mixture of speakers from across the political spectrum, local bands, and classical musicians, among others.
