ACTION ALERT: STOP THE DIVINE STRAKE!
What is Divine Strake?
An explosion of 700 tons of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil scheduled for June 23 at the Nevada Test Site. It will be deposited in a 30 foot deep hole above a tunnel complex and remotely detonated. It is expected to send up a plume 10,000 feet into the air that could possibly carry radioactive contamination from past nuclear tests. It is also expected to generate a shock equivalent to from 3.1 to 3.4 on the Richter scale.
What is it for?
The Defense Threat Reduction Agency submitted a budget document, which stated that the purpose of the test is “to improve the warfighter’s confidence in selecting the smallest proper nuclear yield necessary to destroy underground facilities while minimizing collateral damage.”
Demand an end to the U.S. military occupation and bombing of Newe Sogobia, the Western Shoshone nation!
Here are the details:
We are pulling together the details of the Stop Divine Strake event on May 28. In order to properly plan for what could be a huge gathering, we are asking people to contact us to let us know how many are coming in their group(s). Certainly this number will change, but we want to be responsible in planning for basic water and sanitation needs. If you know of other groups or individuals in your area who are planning on attending, please include these numbers in your estimates. Please advertise this event freely, and distribute updated information as it becomes available.
We are also encouraging visitors to organize into affinity camps, and to collaborate on providing for food water and shelter. While there will be some shared areas for shade, gathering, and workshops, affinity camps are encouraged to schedule their own activities and actions. We will provide scheduling for the main gathering tent.
Participants need to plan on bringing their own food and necessities.
Here are the basics on the event:
Donations can be made through Shundahai Network.
Updated details can be seen at Shundahai Network or Desert Greens Green Party of Utah.
On May 28, 2006dozens of indigenous, environmental justice and peace and disarmament organizations will converge at the Peace Camp outside the Nevada Test Site near Mercury Nevada to protest the Divine Strake test scheduled for June 2, but now apparently postponed to June 23.
Please do not arrive for this event before Saturday. We will be organizing the camp into affinity camps, around a central gathering space. Please contact a local group that is organizing a contingent, or contact Eileen McCabe-Olsen at eileen_mccabe_olsen@yahoo.com directly about an unaffiliated camping area. We are tying to get an idea about numbers so that we can plan responsibly for a large turnout. Please let us know by Wednesday May 17 how many are in your group, and if you will be organizing some kind of camp
What to bring:
The Nevada Desert is known for extremes of temperature. Please bring clothing to allow you to be comfortable during the noonday heat, as well as cool nights. Hats, sunscreen and an abundant supply of water are also strongly recommended. We do not know if any food will be provided. The camp is about 100 miles from amenities, so plan accordingly, and bring your own food.
What we’ll do:
Affinity camps are welcome to schedule their own activities within their camps. There will be a central gathering tent, in which activities will be scheduled. For more information on scheduling activities in the tent, please contact Deanna Taylor at deesings@xmission.org. How to get there:
Keep in mind:
There are absolutely no drugs or alcohol permitted on the site. The site belongs to the Western Shoshone and we are their guests. Please be a culturally sensitive and aware guest and learn Western Shoshone cermonies and protocols. There will be signs posted alerting you to sacred and sensitive sites. Please respect them. Upon arrival, you will be issued a permit by the Western Shoshone for a suggested $5.00 donation.
STOP THE DIVINE STRAKE! IT’S AN INFERNAL MISTAKE!
