My role as Listserve Forum Manger for the Green Party of the United States is really keeping me and my fellow forum managers busy. The latest challenges involve working out the technicalities of moderating posts – working with the list administrator of the national lists and the FM team has shown all of us that we have a lot to learn – even those that are more “techie” than we are! I am sure that once all the “bugs” are ironed out, we will have in place a great system for effectively ensuring that the national discussion lists run smoothly – from the technical standpoint and the moderation standpoint.
I am running for the position of secretary of the GPUS Eco Action Committee. It looks like I am the only one running for that office. That doesn’t mean I will automatically be elected, though. Since we vote by ranking our choices, there could potentially be write-ins and also “none of the above”.
Here is the bio I provided for members of the committee so they would know more about who they are voting for:
Deanna L. “Dee” Taylor is a Co-Coordinator and Alternate Delegate of the Nationally Affiliated Green Party of Utah. Originally from Middletown, Maryland she has lived in Utah for 9 years. Deanna joined the Green Party of Utah in 2001.
Deanna possesses a B.A. in music education, a M.S. in Curriculum and Instruction, both from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) and is licensed in secondary music and special education k-12 (special education certification earned through Utah State University). Deanna has an extensive career in public school teaching, having taught everywhere along the k-12 spectrum, inlcuding in a magnet arts school in Frederick County, Maryland where she founded the piano proficiency program for college bound music majors and including the founding of community children’s music camps and music honor societies for high school students. Deanna’s professional affiliations have included/include a number of educational organizations associated with her profession.
Deanna’s career path has led her to a First Amendment public charter school where she currently teaches music, yearbook, service-learning internship class and is the Academic Service Learning Coordinator, providing opportunities for the students and staff to engage in academic service learning within their curricular areas. Deanna a 23-year veteran educator, has dedicated her life to education in a variety of arena, career-wise and in her activism. She has taught in Maryland, Washington state, and Utah. Deanna’s administrative duties at her current job is administrating the archiving of notes for staff meetings, maintaining the school website and administrating the school’s discussion and notification lists.
Prior to moving to Utah, Deanna was the treasurer two of the three times her father ran for Maryland State House of Delegates in Frederick, Maryland.
Deanna’s activism, in addition to the Nationally Affiliated Green Party of Utah, includes:
– co-founder, Board of Trustee Chair for Blue Sky Institute, a progressive educational organization, “Nurturing the Advancement of the Welfare of the Human Race”, providing Environmental, Social and Cultural Awareness , Arts and Technology , and Community Service opportunities for activist groups and schools.
– member, secretary/treasurer, website administrator , email manager, weekly calendar manager and discussion list administrator of People for Peace and Justice of Utah
– member, Co-Coordinator, Alternate Delegate, website administrator, email manager and discussion list administrator of the Nationally Affiliated Green Party of Utah
– co-founder, member, website administrator, email manager and discussion list administrator of Pom Poms Not Bomb Bombs, Salt Lake’s Radical Cheerleaders
– Member and discussion list administrator of the GPUS Forum Manager Team
Deanna is also seeking the office of Salt Lake County Council member for her district on the registered political party ballot of the Nationally Affiliated Green Party of Utah, Desert Greens. This is Deanna’s first time seeking office.
Deanna’s other volunteer and support activities in Utah include
– supporting, volunteering and participating with activities organized by the Shundahai Network ~ and organization Dedicated to Breaking the Nuclear Chain
– HEAL ( Healthy Environment Alliance ) Utah also dedicated to protecting the health of Utahns from nuclear and toxic waste.
Deanna has participated in actions at the Nevada Test Site, the Skull Valley Goshute Reservation and in Salt Lake in efforts to voice opposition to nuclear testing and the degradation of indigineous land, as well as the transportation of nuclear waste to be stored in places other than where it is created, advocating for alternatives to nuclear generated power. Deanna has also participated in the organizing and implementation of direct (arrest) actions in Salt Lake against the illegal war in Iraq.
Deanna has helped organize and maintain a weekly sidewalk vigil for the past 4 1/2 years, advocating for an end to war and injustices to our earth through the military industrial complex. Deanna was a visible and regular organizer and participant in non-violent demonstrations during the 2002 Winter Olympics which were held in Utah and which created a significant negative impact on the local environment and economy. Deanna has also been an active organizer in planning the largest anti-war demonstrations in Utah’s history.
Deanna is involved in the Green Party because of its values that aim to protect the earth, its life and its environment. She sees the Green Party as a catalyst to achieving that end. She is hopeful that her work through the Green Party will enhance and bring together the efforts of others working to achieve the same. Deanna is enthused to be part of the Eco Action Committee and hopes to continue to contribute and learn from its most knowledgeable members and to help further the goals of the party in protecting life on earth and the earth itself.
Deanna lives in West Jordan with her husband and their dog, cat and lots of wildlife which finds sancutary on their property from the land around them being desecrated in preparation for development. Deanna and her husband have an organic garden from which they share much of the bounty with local food banks, friends, activist events, and others in need. Deanna has three children, ages 21, 19, and 16.
