22 U.S. Represenatatives and Wal-Mart

This week’s Salt Lake City Weekly has an article about the 22 Democrats in Congress who voted to give Wal-Mart advance notice of inspections by the Department of Labor.

In essence, the Dept of Labor gets to tell Wal-Mart in advance that they will be inspected, giving them time to clean up any evidence of accused violations.

Jonathan Tasini, president of the Economic Future Group and author of the article, describes the democrats who are in the recent Wal-Mart Movie that came out, Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price, and what connections they have to Wal-Mart.

Amongst the 22 who voted for this was Utah’s Jim Matheson. Tasini suggests the labor unions not give a dime to any of these representatives in their upcoming campaigns for re-election.

Agreed.

Tasini goes on:
This is unconscionable, morally and politically. I think we all get the moral part—I know many people are pretty hip to the way Wal-Mart rampages through our communities…. But politically, this is dumb: if the Democratic Party can’t be unified in opposition to the No. 1 economic enemy of the people, to the No. 1 enemy undermining any hope for a decent standard of living in the future, then, what exactly should people think the Democratic Party stands for? Why exactly should voters believe that Democrats have any more intention to challenge corporate power if the party is feeding at the Wal-Mart trough?

Breaking News: They (the Democrats) don’t. Here’s the solution: Get Greens in office.

It’s obvious by the tone of the article that not only is Tasini furious over this, but he also seems to be someone who is intereseted in seeing Davey winning this coporate war.
