1941
Jeanette Rankin, the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress in 1916, casts the only vote against U.S. entry into WWII. She also voted against the U.S. entering WWI.

1980
John Lennon was shot and killed outside his apartment building on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

1988
On the first anniversary of the INF (Intermediate Nuclear Force) Treaty, twelve Dutch peace activists, calling themselves “INF Ploughshares,” cut through fences to enter the Woensdrecht Air Force base, The Netherlands. They made their way to cruise missile bunkers where they carried out the first disarmament action in Holland.
