A Pet Peeve: Go Ahead…..Criticize Me….Go Ahead.

Occasionally I run across folks who, for whatever reason choose to criticize my skills in whatever area happens to be the issue. I’m not sure why this is because I go about doing what I do without public recognition (or at least without the intent of attracting such) for the good of humanity. These are typically folks who think that because of their expereinces they have the dominating knowledge over others and are the “experts” in their area(s) of skill and that no other person, particularly me, can ever do any good with my skill level in my area(s).

I am never above improving in any area, regardless of how much training or expereince I have had. In fact, I welcome new knowledge and perceptions.Just ask those who are close to me – I am the most critical of myself and the most open to learning. But when people who hardly know me start analyzing and criticizing me and my skills, I get defensive – not because I think I am more qualified but, rather, because these people have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

Here are some skills of mine that have come into question by some “more highly skilled than I” (ahem!) folks I have encountered in my recent past:

my speaking skills: You know, the landing gear has been released in preparation for the descent towards 50, folks. I have a right to stumble over my words. Give me a break. I’ll keep working on it.

my spelling skills: Comes with typing 90 words a minute, not spell checking, and hormonal induced dyslexia. Again, give me a break. I learned on a manual typewriter in 1977. Just point it out and I’ll fix it.

my emailing skills: You signed up for the list, so why are you telling me to stop sending so many emails? Unsubscribe for goodness sake! Also, top posting, bottom posting…..Emily Posting….Oh brother. Just get beyond that hoity toity stuff and read what I have to say.

my musical skills: Ahem! Excuse me….I deserve to give myself kudos here. I’m professionally trained by and have worked and performed with professionals from The Juilliard School ,University of Rochester Eastman School of Music,Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Northwestern University School of Music…to name just a few….in my schooling and career. I play piano and sing at a professional performing level (although I’m getting more and more rusty beacause my practice sessions have gone by the wayside recently to pursue other endeavors….like saving the world, for example). I have enough knowledge of just about all instruments to be able to teach them at a beginning level in public school classes. I have received awards in the past of excellence for my performances and promoting music in public schools….I still have a lot to learn and areas in which to grow and always have room to improve….so if you think I am doing a disservice to the world, check my resume and references and think again.

my education – Huh? Aside from the fact that I have a B.A., M.S., enough credits for a second masters, a variety of administrative experiences, numerous professional trainings under my belt and two professional teaching endorsements…..I have a boat load of life experience. Again, recognizing I have a gazillion boat loads more to learn and experience…..geesh – recognize my successes and let me live and learn more!

my parenting skills: o.k., you try raising three children on your own for awhile, each with their own issues, disabiltities and levels of skill. Go ahead. Try it. Despite our struggles, my kids have grown up to be responsible and sensitive human beings.

my driving skills: o.k., o.k.! So I need to improve my driving! You got me there. Send me back to school or take away my license! ( just get better mass transportation!).

So to those of you who are critical – please…..examine your own skills first and determine where you need to improve before pointing out others’ deficiencies!
